Next week the beau & I are driving up to Portland to celebrate my birthday! To say I'm excited is an understatement. My sweet friend Chelsea has graciously offered us her home to lodge in during our stay; I can't wait to squeeze her!
So tell me, what's your favourite thing to do in Portland? Good eats/drinks? Sites to see? I've never been so I plan to soak up as much as possible in the 4 days we'll be there. Fingers crossed that I'll magically bump into miss Nubby Twiglet ;) How cool would that be?!

What days will you be here!? I’m traveling next week, but man oh man if there’s any overlap I’d LOVE to see you!
What to do – we have more breweries here than anywhere in the world. So, definitely drink a beer or two.
The Japanese Rose Garden is GORGEOUS and has some incredible views of Mt. Hood, from the middle of a bunch of roses. Photo op!
For another great view of the whole area, have happy hour at Departure, in Pioneer Courthouse Square. I like it better than City Grille because it’s outside instead of inside and it’s less pretentious :)
Hit me up via email if you want any more ideas!

Also, FARMERS MARKET. Go to one of the farmers’ markets! If you’re here on a Saturday, go to the one on the PSU campus. Also, EAT. The food here is incredible.

I only know Portland via “Portlandia”, so… I won’t be much help! Have fun!

I really enjoy Lucky Strike on Hawthorne. Nice atmosphere and good food. The Pied Cow is another favorite of mine. It’s just a block or two over on Belmont! Have fun – our weather has been good lately! OH! And if you like cheesy velvet paintings, we have a museum of those, too!

I saw a couple people have suggested Powell’s, and I support that whole-heartedly. It’s one of my favorite places on earth. Sort of near Powell’s is a great bar called Bartini… they have amazing martinis in all different flavors (Peartinis are my fave) and they also have THE BEST cheddar fondue ever. Hope you have fun!

By James August 9, 2011
There’s a really cool arcade bar that’s got all the classic arcade games and cheap drinks. Can’t remember the name but Monica and I had a blast there. Also for crazy good food check out Pine State Biscuits and Voodoo Donuts. Have fun!

Some of my dearest friends live in Portland, I love it – I hope you have the best adventures!! I could LIVE in Powell’s bookstore. It’s unreal… you should definitely check it out.
On second thought, maybe I’ll just sneak into your bag and come with you and show you the bookstore myself. ;) I wish.

I’m so jealous! That sounds like so much fun! Right now, the only vacay I can afford is driving to South Ga at the end of the quarter to visit family. I hope you have a great time!! And happy birthday!

Funny, I always forget there’s a Portland on the other coast! I live just about an hour from the Maine one, & I could give you a few recommendations there, but I doubt that’d be too helpful. Have fun!
By nicole August 11, 2011
Saturday market, stumptown coffee, McMenamin’s crystal ballroom, shopping on 23rd, Barbar, vault for fancy martinis
By ana August 11, 2011
oh. i will have to live vicariously through your post about portland. hah. i’ve never been. have a great trip! :)
By ainsley August 12, 2011
Liz! Please be sure to eat at numerous food carts while you are there! That is one thing that immediately caught my attention and was so awesome (because we don’t have SO MANY where I’m from and live now). DC Vegetarian was my favorite, they make their own seitan (you may not be vegetarian, but trust that it is AMAZING). Please please please be sure to go to the farmers market–it’s huge! I’m sure that anyone who lives there will tell you the same… 23rd Ave is amazing, so many cute shops and lovely houses (it reminded me a lot of Newbury Street in Boston, if you’ve ever been).
If you need any other food tips or wanna see some pictures, here is a link to my trip in June :)

Definitely check out the food carts/trucks! Potato Champion is my fav (PB&J french fries anyone?) Of course you have to stop by Voodoo Donuts too! And if you’re into nature-y things I definitely suggest Forest Park, it’s absolutely gorgeous and there’s lot of nice walking trails. Have fun!

I hope you have a fun birthday trip! Portland is a great city (which is why I have called it home for the last six years)! Here are some things I enjoy about this city:
1. Mississippi Avenue- Food carts, restaurants, shopping and I highly recommend seeing a show at Mississippi Studios.
2. The roses are still in bloom so I love taking a picnic up to the Rose Test Garden and enjoying an afternoon up there.
3. Berry picking on Sauvie’s Island
4.Cruising Alberta Street: lots of great restaurants and shopping!
5. I second happy hour at Departure, the views are unforgettable!
Have fun in Portlandia!
